Jardin Alpin, Col du Lautaret. Watercolour 13 x 19 cm, 2003
The Col du Lautaret is a high mountain pass which links the Serre Chevalier valley with the Romanche valley. I have wandered around the Jardin Alpin a number of times with family and friends over the years. Every visit has been delightful and educational. Although it was June when I took the series of photographs and sketches which led to this painting you can see that there is still a great deal of snow on the Glacier de la Meije. The challenge was to emphasise the mountain peony in the foreground while leaving the shrubs and plants in the background more Impressionistic.
